There is a lot of hue and cry over Friendship Day today. The first sunday of August... The day of friendship bands and flowers and chocolates and surprise gifts...In school and college, surrounded by a seething crowd of 'have been', 'had been', 'could be' and 'could have been' friends, this is a day like many others, ( for instance - Sam broke his wrist, Tom topped a paper, Jack failed a paper, Jill got kicked out of a lecture.... brilliant days.. ) that unmistakably call for a celebration. It may just be an ice cream or a 5 rupee pop soda, but the fact that a bunch of fun loving creatures are together, magically transforms each of those moments into memorable, high definition kodak moments!
But, on a day like today, when school seems to have finished light years ago and college seems like a distant cry, I sit alone in my room and go over the many faces that the word "Friend" has worn for me over the years.
Believe me, it is not all that rosy. But it is not all that bleak as well.
It has been an adventure and adventures are not always smooth (remember 127 hours?) Up and down... Right, left and center... It winds in every unimaginable direction. However,at the end of it, you feel something - Alive! and a wee bit different from what you were before any of it happened.
So here is to all the faceless, baseless, worthless, shameless, nameless, wonderful, joyful, colorful, plentiful of friends I have known. You are remembered today. Thank you for every smile, every tear, every chocolate, every book,e-mail, note, letter, movie ticket and kick in the butt. You made me who I am. And for that, I am and will always be thankful.
HAPPY FRIENDSHIP DAY!
